Green Good Design Award 2016 for Pedra Silva Arquitectos, Lda

 2016-05-27

The architecture studio Pedra Silva Arquitectos was once again awarded for the Fraunhofer Headquarters project in Oporto.

The prize was announced by the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, who chose the project as the winner of the 2016 Green GOOD DESIGN™ Award.

This is the eighth year that these institutions have developed this very specialized edition of the original GOOD DESIGN program, which was founded in Chicago in 1950 and remains the oldest and most important Awards Program worldwide.

For the 2016 Green GOOD DESIGN™ Award, hundreds of submissions from around the world were received.  Members of The European Centre’s International Advisory Committee—worldwide leaders in the design industry—served as the jury, and selected projects from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, product, packaging, and graphic design as outstanding examples of Green Design from 22 nations.

The Fraunhofer Portugal association is a part of the German company Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe’s largest applied investigation institution. Although it is relatively little known to the general public, Fraunhofer is responsible for such innovations as the MP3 audio format and considerable advances in the research of ideal workspace organization.

Pedra Silva Arquitectos was originally selected for the project through a competition created by the institution for the design of its new offices in Oporto, located in the Oporto University’s Science and Technology Complex. The resulting project meets Fraunhofer’s innovative philosophy through a simple, yet affirmative and dynamic message widely informed by the research already performed by Fraunhofer itself.
